It seemed like a good idea at the time

After some very polite pestering, I decided to give forums a chance. So you can now find a forum for Big Red Podcast over at PopSyndicate.com, a great source for pop culture news and reviews.

Now you may be a lurker - which is good - but I'd be sad if nobody showed up to our party. So please feel free to visit the new forum, you can register pretty easily to be a member and share your thoughts with us in yet another way.

One of these days I might even get us a phone number. Let's not rush things. We're dealing with enough change - new equipment, a forum, and wait until the guys find out I'm making them whole wheat pancakes. Chaos!

This week Derek, Deeps and I are joined by our friends Chris and Jen to reconsider the previous three and a half seasons of LOST. They are recent converts to the show having crammed in the show on DVD in about a month.

Plus we still find time to talk about our old friends Torchwood, How I Met Your Mother, and Reaper. And Deeps offers up his loud assessment of the latest New Amsterdam. I'm married to him and I don't understand how he is still watching that show.

We're on a little hiatus next week but we return with fresh shows and material on April 13. In the meantime, you can check out two new polls I have up.

One is about whether or not Big Red Podcast needs a forum for fans to chat with us about the podcast and the stuff we cover.

The other poll is about whether or not we should reconsider shows we've previously written off.

Since you're voting anyway, why not throw us a bone over at Podcast Alley Podcast Alley? We appreciate it!

We've been invited

Some very nice people have been generous enough to offer up some forum space for us. Would you participate in a BRP forum to discuss shows, things we should cover, and offer us general feedback?

Forum?

Would you use a forum to discuss TV content we do or do not cover on the Big Red Podcast?

Yes - I have a lot of things to say
No - I hate forums
Maybe - I like to lurk

BRP 74: Hysterical Laughter Edition

This week Derek finds his way back to join me and Deeps working through new series Miss Guided and the return of former favorites like Reaper, HIMYM, Torchwood and LOST. Plus Derek tells us something about New Amsterdam. I laughed a lot, so I didn't hear everything he said.

BRP 73: Low Energy Edition

This week Derek is out "on assignment" so Deeps and I valiantly brave the podcast alone. I should note that instead of eating our usual brunch before recording we ate Indian food. You can decide if that makes a difference.

We talk about two new shows called The Return of Jezebel James and Canterbury's Law; then we take on the return of Reaper, LOST, Torchwood, Breaking Bad and The Wire.

Since it is early in the month, I beg for votes on Podcast Alley. FYI - our recording schedule will be slightly different next week. The show will probably go up on Monday night.

This week Derek, Deeps and I offer up a lot of shout outs to listeners and then we tackle two new series: Unhitched and New Amsterdam.

Then we unravel the latest episodes of LOST and Torchwood and Derek explores the finale of Sarah Connor Chronicles. You may hear gentle snoring during this part. Do not adjust your audio.

BRP 70: Mendelian Inheritance edition

This week is a real humdinger. Derek, Deeps and I discuss the Pterodactyl theory on Torchwood, how happy hour can make LOST a little tougher to follow, how car porn isn't enough to carry a show with a wooden lead in Knight Rider, bad science on Sarah Connor Chronicles and finally how to do genre better with Supernatural.

Plus Derek stuns the group by reading a book(!) called Anasi Boys by Neil Gaiman and we review Be Kind, Rewind. Then we totally ignore the Oscars. Weird, huh?

This week Deeps and I tackle the toughest question of our marriage - Are you writing Reba fan fiction? Luckily, Derek is around to help us figure out if our heretofore wedded bliss can survive it. Before we have to call Doctor Phil, we are address the latest developments in the WGA strike.

We talk about three new series including the differences between Cashmere Mafia and Lipstick Jungle. That third series is called Welcome to the Captain and the most important fact you should know is that Raquel Welch is 68! For reals.

Then we discuss House, LOST, the Korean film The Host and my deep affection for LEGO Star Wars for the Wii. And I announce the next selection in the Big Red Film Festival: In A Lonely Place.

I share my quiet rage about the return of A Daily Show and the Colbert Report (those are hard Ts people), then we talk at length about the grim storytelling of Medium and we explore existential horrors in Cemetery Man.

Plus we talk about American Gladiators and Cashmere Mafia because Derek isn't afraid to watch bad stuff. Oh and I threaten to end the podcast if forced to watch a ratings juggernaut.

BRP 63: When she turns on the heat she thinks of me edition

This week we mark the triumphant return of the Big Red Podcast from a two-week holiday hiatus.

First we discuss the very kind Jon Armstrong and his very cool interview (he is cool - I am not) with me to discuss why I podcast on If You're Just Joining Us.

Then we give a shout-out to our friends at Cinema Diabolica (a show for adults only) - check out Episode 3 where they talk about the film we're covering for our third installment in the Big Red Film festival: Cemetary Man. (FYI - week four's installment will be the classic film Chinatown starring Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway.)

And finally, we talk about stuff we've seen, played and read including Derek's pick for game of the year, the scariest movie I saw in 2007 (No Country For Old Men) and the darling of best of movie lists, Juno. Plus Deeps tells you to watch The Wire, if you can handle it.

Then we offer up our assessment of Dance Dance Revolution The Hottest Party for the Wii.

Plus I announce the second selection for the Big Red Film Festival - Bullitt starring Steve McQueen for episode 61. The festival starts next week with episode 60's entry, The Thin Man starring William Powell and Myrna Loy.

Podcamp Boston 2007

This year's Podcamp Boston will be more awesome than last year's - if for no other reason than because Derek and I will be attending.

So if you're going to be there, keep an eye out for a tall fellow and his short, redhaired companion. Also - we'll be wearing t-shirts that say Big Red Podcast on them. Derek loves conventions. I love name badges. See how this works out?

Deeps, aka my husband, life and podcast partner, refuses to attend for reasons that are unknown. Well, they're known to me - sometimes he's a crank. Plus I think he wants to master Wii Golf. He'll be missed.

We're also going to be giving away delightful and probably delicious swag. And in helping to push the agenda of pop culture as actual culture we'll be giving away some books. I have a small collection of novels I read as part of the 50 book challenge. These are some of my favorite novels, and you could get your own new, unread copy. Enjoy!

In addition, I will be at Blogtoberfest 2007 next week at the beautiful Pour House in Boston. You should say hello and then tell me how much you love the Big Red Podcast. I might be persuaded to buy you a drink!

Big Red Bonus: How to fix CBS' Moonlight

Every year television executives throw up some horrific shows for us to watch and every year we have to endure some truly awful stuff. Because we’re smart, awesome and feeling a bit magnanimous we’ve offered up some suggestions for how to fix some shows.

This week we’ve decided to figure out how to fix Moonlight, a show we savaged in episode 50. It’s a bonus episode! Sure, it probably should not be saved, but like I said we’re magnanimous.

And that’s the word of the day! Live it, love it, use it.

Episode 51: Cliffhanger Edition!

Last week we had a little cliffhanger on episode 50 of the Big Red Podcast. This week we resolve it and quickly move on to new stuff like Pushing Daisies and the sustainability of whimsy; most improved second episode; hair and underwear; and of course what shows are on probation.

Plus we talk about a bunch of other shows and try to keep closer to 30 minutes. We did it in 39 - which is good considering how much we talk about. Oh and I make an argument for wacky. And did I mention there's a poll? Go answer it!

Update: Our Dexter Season One extravaganza podcast can be found here.

Episode 50: Supersized Fall TV Review Edition

To help mark the first year of the podcast and the milestone that is Episode 50 - Derek decided to... go visit friends in Jersey?

What the H, Derek?

Whatever. We made due. Deeps and I blazed through almost an entire fall TV season in one hour. New shows and returning favorites are included. Sorry it's so long (over an hour).

That's what she said!

Anyway, we covered shows that aired this week thematically. So, in rough order, we discussed the following shows:

The Soaps
Cane, Dirty Sexy Money, and Big Shots

The Comedies
How I Met Your Mother, Ugly Betty, My Name Is Earl, and The Office

Stuff with the Devil

Reaper

Doctor Shows
Private Practice, House, and Grey's Anatomy

Genre Shows
Moonlight, Heroes, and Torchwood

We're exhausted.

More! More! More! Bonus Episode for the end of summer

We focused on talking about the new Fall TV season, but we're still enjoying the last bits of summer. So we recorded a bonus podcast to cover a lot of the shows that were wrapping up as we slide into fall.

I forget to introduce the fellas until about half way through. You can see how weird cold medicine makes me. On the bright side, I'm feeling much better now.

This week we wax nostalgic about ice cream, fireflies and TV like: Flash Gordon, Painkiller Jane, Doctor Who, Burn Notice, Torchwood, Eureka and Saving Grace.

Plus Derek makes me laugh so hard I cough. Gross!

Episode 46: Welcome Freshmen!

We're winding down the summer. The surest sign of this fact is the back-to-school onslaught we're experiencing.

Living near some of the finest institutions of higher learning in the country has benefits: awesome used bookstores, cheap eats, famous people drop by to sign books, and a great old movie theater. But the downside is the first month or so when everyone is readjusting to school life or worse, facing it for the first time. I call them Freshmen.

(And this is a sardine can.)

We also talk about the penultimate episode of the first season of Flight of the Conchords. We talk about getting stupid on Eureka, being a big baby on Mad Men, and getting in touch with your inner jerk on Californication. Yes, somebody actually watched a third episode of that show.

We also review The Simpsons Movie. But the real news is that the theater we saw it in smelled a lot like a barn. I flashed back to my younger years working at a horse farm in Indiana. It's not a smell you expect to encounter in the mall.

Thanks to our recording delay we chatted as fast as we could about Laurie Notaro's first novel called "There's A Slight Chance I Might Be Going To Hell", the latest Harry Potter movie, John from Cincinnati, Flight of the Conchords, Doctor Who, Eureka, Ice Road Truckers and Rampage: Total Destruction for the Wii.

We were trying to make up for lost time.

A tiny little delay

My apologies, regular listeners, we're delayed a few days on recording. Usually we record on Sunday but we did a small kitchen renovation and that has resulted in lots of chaos around the house.

Looks like everything is okay now. More or less. And I have new counters to lovingly buff into a beautiful shine. And I think we're on schedule to record tonight without incident, but sadly without Derek. Then we're back on Sunday - as usual.

So check back late tonight, you should find a new podcast. Unless some pipes break or something. Then all bets are off.

Plus we discuss the return of Doctor Who and we admire a certain new companion - she's feisty and fun. And I review a video game - Wario Ware Smooth Moves for the Wii. I can hardly believe it myself.

Episode 37: Like Fred Flintstone's Imaginary Friend edition*

This week Derek, Deeps and I talk about TV and video games - that's right we branched out!

We talk about Age of Love (hideous!), Burn Notice (pretty okay), and The 4400 (dripping with mythology!). Plus we discuss the finer points of Lego Star Wars and Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz.

*We did get this wrong - but we kind of knew it.

Summer is here and we tackle the first installment of summer TV series including John from Cincinnati, Kyle XY (I know!), The 4400 (by request), The Closer, Creature Comforts, and Flight of the Conchords.

Plus we talk movies - including Once and remind you about The King of Kong.

Podcast 35: Sopranos Finale Edition

We spent one whole day thinking about last night's series finale of the Sopranos. But first we finally talk about the Gilmore Girls finale (for those keeping track at home), a film by Jake Kasdan called The TV Set which is a nice bookend for last week's podcast about new TV pilots, and lastly we take on Tony Soprano himself.

Episode 34: Knocked Up and other secrets edition

This week Derek, Deeps and I review Judd Apatow's new movie Knocked Up. We were surprised by our reactions. Who knew? FYI - we talk about pregnancy in a very frank way. Younger listeners or those easily offended should skip this week.

Then we attempt to start talking about the 800 new shows debuting in the fall. We've watched clips and previews, but still haven't seen any full pilots. That doesn't deter us from making our list of stuff that may intrigue or offend. And then someone gets started about scientists. It is a big episode - but it'll help make that drive to the beach go a little faster.

Episode 30: My clothes are burning my skin edition

It's sweeps time - so I've called in some special guests: Salena and Erin! They join me and Derek to talk about the wonders of Heroes, LOST, Grey's Anatomy and speculation about an Addison spin-off, Veronica Mars' return (we debate whether or not it was triumphant) and the horrible majesty of The Office.

Plus we talk about why so many men are shirtless. Off color jokes are made, but no Dereks were harmed in the making of this podcast.

They Prefer the Term Graphic Novel

This week Deeps and I talk about the Big Red Blog’s Donors Choose campaign, Derek, and we offer up some listener shout-outs. Plus we talk about disappointing fights on Heroes, The Riches, the cancellation of Drive, LOST and sneaky ladies, a second look at Ugly Betty, and a documentary called The King of Kong.

Plus I reveal my hatred for My Name is Earl and my horrifying past with decoupage.

Episode 28: Like, Like, Like edition

Right - so we went to visit Deeps' parents this weekend to help them clean out their house. After 30 years, they're planning on selling and retiring.

They have 30 years of stuff. We did huge amounts of yard work and cleaning - I cut down half a pine tree. Deeps and I hauled about 400 tons of old junk out of their basement and then spread 60 cubic yards of mulch without a rake.

You should understand that after doing this, sleeping poorly and then driving five hours from Jersey back to Boston we still did a podcast.

Because we love you, podcast listeners. This one is a little more ... well, I say like a lot when I'm tired. I'm really, really sorry.

This week we talk about Drive on Fox, The Sopranos, Supernatural (I even talk about the thematic similarities between their latest episodes), LOST, The Shield, Acceptable TV, This American Life on TV, why TV is awesome, and we do a review of Casino Royale and Fountains of Wayne's latest offering Traffic and Weather.

Whew!

Episode 27: The Marshmallow Edition

This week Derek returns to join me and Deeps to chat about the return of The Sopranos. We take a look at the first season of Sci Fi's The Dresden Files and review the pilot of Sci Fi's new show Pain Killer Jane. We also hit Big Red Podcast favorites like LOST, 30 Rock, The Office, and House.

Deeps makes another case for watching Friday Night Lights (he lurves it!). Derek watches the vampire show we talked about last week, he's captivated by it. So we learn something today - Lifetime isn't just for women. It is also for Derek.

The Cat’s Meow and a bonus*

This week Deeps and I (along with the cat) chat about a lot of television including resolving dramatic problems The Office, dirty cops on The Shield, women in chains on LOST, hairdos on House, Thomas Jefferson on 30 Rock and of course the problem with vampires (in Canada or anywhere else).

And we split out our discussion of movies into a bonus episode where we cover Green for Danger, Dead and Buried, Spellcaster, Days of Being Wild and some tangents about Uwe Boll – because I’m crazy like that (oh and the great piece I reference is found here at Something Awful).

The Messianic Complex Edition

This week Deeps subs for Derek who is out looking for a house. Meanwhile, we painted our hallways. Everyone get excited.

We tackle a lot of tough topics like Super Cops, Norma Rae, Serpico, Shaft and later his big score, The Dresden Files, The Riches, Foreign Accent Syndrome, the importance of a sense of place, John Locke's love of blowing stuff up, Vermeer (yes the painter), Rembrandt (yes the painter), architecture, Vanilla Ice (yes the rapper) and This American Life.

Can you believe we covered so much in just 40 minutes? Me either. You might be able to get some college credits for listening to this podcast.

Aliens, Magic Cats, and Hair Cuts

This week Deeps and I wrangle with some big issues - namely the horrors of mid season replacements. One member of the team refused to watch either The Wedding Bells or The Winner. I thought the vows said for better or worse?

We also review a classic from 1951 called The Man From Planet X; we talk about Peter's slick haircut on Heroes; and we wonder what happened to John Locke on LOST. Deeps says he likes shiny stuff and I say he's suffered a very serious head injury.

Plus we offer another exciting listener shout-out!

On the Road to Shambala!

This week Derek and I recap the Oscars and I offer Marty Scorsese some fashion tips. He's a tiny man!

Then we race through a partial review of some of the books from the Dresden Files series and how they relate as source material for the show. We speculate about what will happen next on Heroes and LOST and try to make sense of the latest mystery on Veronica Mars. Even though I was right about almost everything (see last week's VM podcast), I still don't understand it.

And I take a look at NBC's The Black Donnellys and complain about bad sitcom clip shows. I'm looking at you, Scrubs.

What's that sound? It's murder!

It's two-fer Sunday at the Big Red Podcast studios. Erin, Salena, Derek and I talk about the last week of February Sweeps. Not everyone made it, we mourn their losses (to varying degrees) and marvel at the ridiculousness of sweeps stunts.

Meredith is blue? Shouldn't she be grey?

Sylar has murder in his heart, in possibly the most gleefully cheesy line delivery ever.

Nobody asked me which three questions I wanted ask - I'm looking at you LOST producers.

Plus we say good-bye to our friends down in Orange County.

And we offer up our best Oscar predictions while busting out bad Boston accents for the DePAHted.

Supersized podcast!

Deeps stepped up this morning when we learned that Derek's car was frozen in some kind of tundra in Cambridge. Not to worry - he's okay.

This week we covered a lot of hot television including: The Dresden Files, Heroes, How I Met Your Mother, Heroes, Veronica Mars, Medium, LOST, Grey's Anatomy, The OC, and The Office. Plus we wrangle with a little word, podcasting with your spouse and I apologize to Jacki for going over 30 minutes.

Plus - there is still time to send in your thoughts about Veronica Mars for inclusion in our special round-table discussion next week.

God help you if you're sick at Seattle Grace

Derek and I chat about the wonderful world of television sweeps. February is here and before we get socked in with a big snow storm (allegedly) we break down the latest episodes of Heroes, Veronica Mars, the triumphant return of LOST (yaay!), The OC, Grey's Anatomy and the Thursday night comedies.

We've seen a couple of disasters, some deaths, babies, babies in danger, and of course mysterious mysteries. Sweeps is on!

Send us your feedback: podcast(at)thebigredblog.com - we're looking for contributions for our special Veronica Mars roundtable discussion at the end of the month.

The Big Red Blog: The Dental Episode

This week I struggle a little after a long afternoon at the dentist’s office. Luckily, Derek has lots of important things to say about Heroes, Gilmore Girls, Veronica Mars, The OC and Grey’s Anatomy. We also review the new series on Sci-Fi called The Dresden Files and I offer up a review of Mike Judge’s Idiocracy.

Plus we announce a special opportunity to participate in our upcoming Veronica Mars podcast event. It's as easy as sending an email to podcast(at)thebigredblog.com

Worlds we don't want to live in

Derek is back this week and he talks a little bit about this year's MIT Mystery Hunt Experience. I share a delightful story about how much my Dad loves 24.

We also bring in our really smart friend, Chris, to talk to us about popular music - a subject we are sorely lacking on in our pop culture podcast. He talks to us about critically acclaimed but overrated music from 2006 including works from Bob Dylan, Joanna Newsom, TV on the Radio, and The Hold Steady.

And of course we talk about lots of TV in the run up to sweeps including three shows worth checking out: Eureka, Extras and Psych.

Derek is not impressed by David Arquette

It is Sunday and another Sunday means another podcast.

This week Derek and I thank our nice fans for leaving us iTunes feedback. Then we review three new shows: In Case of Emergency, The Knights of Prosperity, and Dirt. I review Slither and Derek shares his insider view of the annual MIT Mystery Hunt. Plus we keep it under 30 minutes. Happy 2007!

The Year in Review

Derek and I managed to pull together a podcast before heading out for a night of debauchery (him) or being in bed by 10:30 (me). This week we attack the year in television - talking about shows that tried to do something daring and interesting and were successful and others who failed as they reached for greatness.

It happens.

Plus Derek shares his adventures working on a float for the Rose Bowl Parade and I give my first ever game review. Terrifying!

If you see a float with a big eagle on it and lots of teenagers singing, look at the black highlights on the right wing. That is Derek's handiwork!

And once again I plead for an Itunes review. Happy New Year!

Load up that player, we're going to grandma's house

I'm sure you're anxiously loading stuff onto your mp3 player to help make that long drive or flight to grandma's house a little easier. I know I am!

Might I offer up the latest episode of The Big Red Blog podcast? I lured Deeps into chatting with me about the Showtime series Dexter. I'll say it - Dexter is the best new show on television.

If you haven't watched the show or read the books and don't want to be spoiled, you should skip this week's installment. But if you'd like to hear about the most compelling and disturbing character on television then please, by all means, listen to this week's podcast!

Do Over! Do Over!

We were experimenting with a new podcast set-up, and while the sound wasn't that great I didn't realize how bad it turned out until today. So we've replaced the bad podcast from Sunday (podcast121706) with one recorded tonight with my very special co-host Deeps!

Oh yes, I finally lured him into helping me out on the podcast. We miss Derek, but I think Deeps and I can manage. This tried to recreate as much as we could from the previous podcast with better sound (although it could be better). So please enjoy!

Remember, remember it's still December*

This week Derek shares his thoughts about a couple of video games like F.E.A.R. and something about Rainbows and terrorists. Sounds progressive to me. I review Christopher Moore's book Fluke and suggest you pick up The Stupidest Angel if you like zombie Santas. Plus we chat about this week's best television and preview what's coming for 2007.

*I deleted this podcast because the sound quality was so bad it wasn't worth the bandwidth. So my apologies if you tried to listen.

The good, the bad and the Earl

This week Derek and I tackle Earl, Scrubs, The OC, Dexter and Heroes. Who knew The OC was good again? Sadly, Earl continues his downward spiral, Scrubs is dealing with swollen ankles and lots of plot, while Dexter faces a past he can't really remember. That can't end well....

TV is good again, didn't you hear?

Derek's Hair Episode

This week on the podcast, Derek returns to talk about why he loves Heroes, the allegedly triumphant return of Scrubs, the glory of Ed Helms on The Office, and he's ready to forgive Veronica Mars for being a big dummy. I'm not so forgiving, but you already knew that.

Plus I throw in a random restaurant review for a place you'll never visit. Cheers!

How many Ps in tryptophan?

I'm happy to report that despite being full of turkey and assorted starches, I managed to get a podcast done this week. Sure, television was a little bit light but I share my thoughts about Dexter, Veronica Mars and Heroes this week. I also talk about Sam Lipsyte's novel The Subject Steve which would make an excellent gift... for someone as twisted as I am.

Happy Thanksgiving!
